The main focus in The Joy Luck Club is the complex relationship between mothers and daughters, and the inherent bond that’s always between them despite generational and cultural conflicts. The novel follows June Woo ’s search to understand her deceased mother Suyuan ’s life, supplemented by stories from her mother’s three best friends, Lindo, An-mei, and Ying-ying. Suyuan explains why she organized the original Joy Luck Club in war-torn China and how others reacted. The mah-jongg game and meal provided camaraderie for four women and helped them maintain their hope even after trauma. Suyuan is naturally a hopeful and forward-looking woman, and the club reinforced and spread this hope to others.

This book has low reviews but is actually not poorly written. It is moderately predictable towards the end and hasn't been entirely graceful in its aging but it is bad by any means. My one complaint is that the age demographic this should appeal to doesn't need the beginning discussion about body image that The Nobody Club contains/5.
